NAVER Corp. (CEO Choi Soo-yeon) is partnering with Google, Samsung and Meta to extend NAVER Map’s navigation experience to AI glasses, a first among Korean map services. The service will be available first on Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta glasses and will also come to Google and Samsung’s intelligent eyewear, slated for release later this year.
Rather than repeatedly looking down at their phones on the go, users will be able to get voice directions to their destination through their AI glasses and easily check key information for getting around, such as which direction to go and whether there are stairs or escalators ahead. In June, NAVER Map launched Real-time Walking Navigation, which added live voice guidance to walking directions, much like in-car navigation. Through its collaboration with Google, Samsung and Meta, NAVER Map is now taking that experience to AI glasses. Navigation on AI glasses will launch on Android first, with iOS support to follow in stages.
NAVER Map is also introducing a dedicated voice activation feature for AI glasses, letting wearers call up the service. While en route, users can ask for information by voice—saying, for example, “When will I get there?” or “Find a convenience store nearby”—and get answers instantly. On the intelligent eyewear co-developed by Google and Samsung, users will also be able to use Gemini to open NAVER Map by voice and start navigating right away.
Beyond real-time voice guidance, NAVER Map plans to combine AI glasses with the wealth of local information it has built up, connecting physical spaces with digital information more seamlessly and offering new local experiences every step of the way. On future AI glasses with built-in displays, NAVER Map could also provide route guidance in augmented reality (AR), alongside details on nearby stores and available NAVER Place coupons.
“Navigation on AI glasses will let users find their way without constantly checking their phones, so they can stay focused on getting where they’re going while naturally taking in directions and rich local information,” said Chung Kyung Hwa, Leader of NAVER Map. “NAVER Map is an all-in-one platform woven into everyday life, supporting users throughout their journey, from discovering places to getting there. Going forward, we will take NAVER Map a step further, evolving it into a platform that connects the physical and digital worlds more vividly while continuing to deliver new map experiences to our users.” (End)
