NAVER Corporation (KRX: 035420) officially launched its new ‘Keyword Review’ system for offline small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) on its NAVER Smart Place service on Oct. 26, after about three months of beta testing.

In March, NAVER announced that it would address various grievances raised by offline SMEs and make system improvements that would support their businesses. The first step was to replace the star-rating review system with a Keyword Review system to provide advanced service for the benefit of both customers and Smart Place business owners.
In July, NAVER introduced the Keyword Review system for a trial period, allowing users to select representative keywords and phrases that reflect the actual quality or characteristics of the business they visited, such as “the ingredients are fresh” or “the dessert is delicious.”
“Compared to online businesses, offline businesses are greatly influenced by star ratings,” said NAVER CEO Seong-Sook Han. “We are building a new review system that both business owners and customers give and receive constructive feedback.”
In the past, users had to read countless reviews written by other customers to get information about the business. Users can easily find a business that suits their taste or purpose of visit, and SMEs can connect with potential customers who might like their businesses and see customer comments more objectively.
NAVER Smart Place not only provides digital maps, business profiles and reviews but also offers ordering and reservation services. The reviews of a NAVER Smart Place can only be written by customers who have visited the business through the ‘NAVER Reservation’ system, or who have authenticated their visit using the receipt.
“Many platforms that provide information about local businesses use a star-rating system because users can easily rate the businesses they have visited. However, there was a limitation in that the strengths and characteristics of the business were overshadowed by the star rating they got,” said Yong-Seong Lee, the senior leader of NAVER Place. “Through Keyword Review, NAVER Place will become the platform that satisfies both users and offline SMEs.”
Currently, the Keyword Review service is applied to 10 business types, including restaurants, hotels, beauty salons, fitness centers, Pilates studios, photo studios, flower shops, amusement parks, pet-friendly cafés and play cafés, and it is planned to expand to all industries this year. Starting tomorrow, business owners can choose whether or not to show the business’ average star-rating score, and the star-rating system will be removed in the first quarter of 2022.
