NAVER Cloud and Samsung Electronics today announced a collaborative initiative to deploy private 5G network at 1784, NAVER’s new second headquarters located in Bundang-gu, Seongnam, a city near Seoul.
NAVER Cloud signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Samsung Electronics in March 2022 for a private 5G network collaboration after applying for a license in November 2021 to deploy a private 5G network. NAVER applied Samsung Electronics’ 5G solution to 1784 as well as received final approval from the Korean government to establish a 5G base station. As a result, 1784 became the first structure in Korea dedicated to tech convergence utilizing a private 5G network. As a result, 1784 became the first structure in Korea dedicated to tech convergence utilizing a private 5G network.
The private 5G network installed in 1784 allows the building act as a test bed where innovative services fused with cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), robotics and autonomous navigation are continuously tested in a real-world setting. More notably, 1784 is the world’s first autonomous mobile robot facility to be connected to a private 5G network and the cloud.
The cloud service connected to the private 5G network at 1784 is capable of acting as the “brain” for dozens or even hundreds of robots, enabling real-time data transfer and accurate autonomous navigation with ultra-low latency. The technology allows the robots to provide many kinds of convenient and task-supportive services such as delivering parcels or coffee to any employee working inside the building.
Samsung Electronics’ technology deployed at 1784 include 5G radios and Samsung Compact Core, the company’s network-in-a-box solution, the neural network connecting the robots to the cloud. The private 5G radios from Samsung Electronics include an optimized uplink allocation feature with an allocation ratio of up to 40 percent whereas general network is at 20 percent. This doubled upload capabilities help data generated from robots inside of 1784 to be handled simultaneously for seamless operation.
NAVER Cloud and Samsung Electronics are working together to develop a new business model to commercialize the technology in Korea and abroad. They are seeking additional solution partners to establish private 5G ecosystems within various industries such as manufacturing, logistics, shipping, and pharmaceuticals. The two companies are also collaborating on NAVER Cloud’s GAK Sejong, the company’s second data center that is scheduled to be completed next year in Sejong City, 120 kilometers south of Seoul.
“Our collaboration with NAVER is Korea’s first success case deploying a private 5G network utilizing Samsung Electronics’ network solutions and it perfectly demonstrates both companies’ vision and technological capabilities in creating synergies for 5G network, robotics and the cloud,” said Chang Yong, Vice President of Global Sales and Marketing, Networks Business at Samsung Electronics. “We plan to build out private 5G network ecosystems in Korea and overseas, creating success cases for transportation, hospitals, schools and SOC facilities.”
“1784 is the convergence point for NAVER’s advanced technologies, making it a test bed for exploring technologies of the future with cloud services based on 5G” said Han Sang-young, Executive Director at NAVER Cloud Strategy and Planning. “In partnership with Samsung, we plan to develop new private 5G network opportunities and work together to help more companies achieve digital transformation with advanced cloud technology.”
