NAVER’s real-time pornography–filtering system, “X-eye 2.0,” is being rebranded as “CLOVA GreenEye.” By making it available to the public as an open application programming interface (API), NAVER aims to further contribute to creating a healthy online environment and protecting users.
NAVER launched “X-eye” in 2017 as a real-time pornographic image–filtering technology that operates 24/7. By analyzing millions of images stored on NAVER, the system can detect and block inappropriate images and videos from appearing in the search results in real time. In addition to searches, the technology has been integrated into various NAVER services, including NAVER café, blog, and Knowledge iN, to provide a safer user experience. In 2021, the system was upgraded to “X-eye 2.0,” improving accuracy to 99.5% by implementing a more detailed categorization – normal, obscene, adult, and indecent – and the results of NAVER’s studies on image recognition, such as “ReXNet,” “CutMix,” and “AdamP.”
NAVER announced on December 16 that “X-eye 2.0” will be rebranded as “CLOVA GreenEye,” and the pornography-filtering technology will be made available via open API on the NAVER Cloud Platform. “CLOVA GreenEye” will inspect each image individually and return a value (normal, obscene, adult, or indecent) based on the harmful content’s category. It can be accessed by registering on the NAVER Cloud Platform, and during the beta service stage, only approved users are granted access to the service.
With the launch of “CLOVA GreenEye,” startups and small- and medium-sized companies with limited technological capabilities will be able to automate the harmful content filtering process and minimize manual inspections to provide stable content services in real time.
Lee Jeong-kew, head of NAVER’s Service Operation, said, “NAVER aims to enhance the Internet ecosystem by making our pornography-filtering technology, which has been used for the past five years within NAVER to protect users, available to external companies. NAVER will continue to advance the AI models and update the data to expand the scope of harmful content detection.”
NAVER has also implemented various technical and policy measures to eliminate other harmful content, such as illegal posts and malicious comments. In 2019, NAVER introduced “Cleanbot” to improve its malicious comment filters, and since 2013, it has been actively working to block pornography and illegal posts, protect children and young people, protect copyrights, personal information, and users, and ensure user satisfaction through its “Green Internet” campaign (green.naver.com).
