NAVER Corporation (CEO Choi Soo-yeon) successfully live-streamed the “2022 Qatar World Cup” and captivated sports fans’ attention with various services, including Open Talk, Winning Predictions, and World Cup–themed pages.
NAVER Sports announced on December 21 that with the live-streaming of 64 games from group matches to the final, it successfully operated “Cheering Talk,” where users could communicate with each other during live-streaming; “Open Talk,” where users can discuss the games and cheer together based on interests without limits on the number of participants; and “Winning Predictions,” which was very popular among sports fans because of unexpected outcomes.
From the opening ceremony and the final match between France and Argentina, a total of 121,173,945 cumulative viewers watched 64 games, and the match with the highest number of simultaneous viewers was the Korea–Ghana match (2,365,005 people) held on November 28.
During the last Group H matches that decided which teams would advance to the round of 16, more than 4 million simultaneous viewers for the Korea–Portugal match (2,174,007) and Uruguay–Ghana match (2,365,005) combined were recorded, the highest in the history of NAVER Sports.
NAVER’s next-generation community service, “Open Talk,” introduced in September, experienced rapid growth thanks to the World Cup. As of December 20, a total of 2,682 open talks have been created, with 1,387 in the soccer / overseas soccer category, indicating an active gathering of users based on the common interest of “sports.”
Open talks have emerged as a new platform for communication as more than 2.78 million people visited the open talks related to the World Cup, and over 510,000 messages were generated in chats. Some of the popular open talks were the “Qatar On-Site Reporting Team Open Talk” for uploads of live photos and videos, as well as interviews by the on-site reporters on the World Cup, and the “Leestar TV Open Talk,” where the members of Leestar TV, a soccer creator channel popular among the MZ generation, communicate with the people.
NAVER also uploaded various short-form videos that suit the characteristics of Open Talks, and the average number of views per video was about 2.6 times higher compared to other World Cup–related videos.
The “World Cup Winning Prediction” event, which was postponed three times because no one predicted the results correctly, also drew attention as a participatory event. A total of 3,184,288 people participated in the seven rounds of prediction, surpassing 1.8 million people who participated in the 2018 Russia World Cup predictions.
Leader of NAVER Sports Joo Kun-bum said, “NAVER utilized its array of technologies and expertise in community service operations to bring the excitement of Korea's advancement to the round of 16 to a wide audience. Notably, NAVER was able to engage a significant number of young sports fans, with about 68% of live viewers, 52% of Open Talk visitors, and 73% of prediction event participants in the MZ generation or younger. Moving forward, NAVER intends to maintain its status as a next-generation community platform.”
