The popularity of dramas based on webcomics and web novels is generating increased interest in the original titles, leading to a virtuous cycle. In the first 10 days after the release of a drama adaptation of the webcomic 'Marry My Husband' on January 1, the total GMV and views increased 17.1 times and 7.1 times, respectively.
"Marry My Husband" is a popular webcomic created by Studio LICO, a subsidiary of WEBTOON, with a cumulative number of views reaching 810 million. It is based on a web novel of the same name and follows the main character, Kang Ji-won, who is betrayed and killed by her husband after he has an affair with her friend. The plot revolves around themes of revenge and second chances. The protagonist is sent back in time and given the opportunity to live her life differently and change her fate.
Since its release on January 1 on TVING, a Korean online streaming service, the drama has received an explosive response worldwide, leading to a surge in the webcomic’s views and GMV.
WEBTOON has reported a significant increase in the total GMV and number of views following the airing of the drama "Marry My Husband." Within 10 days after the drama aired (January 1 to 10, 2024), the total GMV increased 17.1 times compared to the 10 days before it aired (December 22 to 31, 2023). The number of views has also increased 8.1 times during the same period. Thailand had the highest increase, with its GMV increasing 55.4 times and views 36.2 times. Currently, "Marry My Husband" is available in 10 languages.
Starting from “Marry My Husband,” over 30 TV shows or movies inspired by webcomics from WEBTOON are set to be released this year. “The 8 Show”, which is based on "Money Game," will be available on Netflix globally this year. Other series in production include "A Killer Paradox," "True Beauty," and "Tower of God" Season 2.
