TEAM NAVER has announced its participation in building a next-generation AI data center in Morocco, North Africa, through a consortium with NVIDIA, AI infrastructure company Nexus Core Systems, and global investment firm Lloyds Capital. The project aims to deliver sovereign AI computing services across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region, with the first phase set to launch in Q4 this year.
Located just 15 km from mainland Europe and directly connected via multiple submarine fiber optic cables, Morocco offers geographical advantages and cost competitiveness in terms of electricity and operations. Leveraging these strengths, the consortium plans to build a 500 MW renewable energy–powered data center to supply Europe with more cost-effective and reliable AI infrastructure.
As the first phase of the project, a 40 MW AI supercomputing infrastructure equipped with NVIDIA’s latest Blackwell (GB200) GPUs will be built within this year, followed by a phased expansion up to 500 MW. The consortium has signed a strategic renewable energy agreement with energy company TAQA, securing a sustainable and stable power infrastructure.
NAVER Cloud will serve as a key platform operator for the data center alongside Nexus Core Systems and Lloyds Capital. Leveraging its advanced cloud platform, it will offer integrated AI services and applications. In particular, to meet the EMEA region’s strict requirements for data sovereignty, the project will establish a sovereign cloud and AI framework that enables all processes—from data storage to processing and operations—to be performed locally and independently, ensuring more precise responses to customer needs.
TEAM NAVER is one of the few companies with proprietary technological capabilities across the entire AI value chain, from AI services and data to AI backbone, supercomputing infrastructure, cloud, and data centers. This advantage positions NAVER as the ideal partner to simultaneously address Europe’s pressing needs for data sovereignty and technological independence.
Chae Seon-ju, Head of Strategic Business Division at NAVER, said, “Trust in NAVER’s technological expertise and execution capabilities, proven through our projects in Saudi Arabia, has led to our participation in this global project.” She added, “This collaboration marks a significant turning point in the expansion of NAVER’s cloud and AI technologies from Japan, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East into the European market.”
Chae emphasized, “NAVER will continue to strengthen its capabilities and expand collaborations with various partners to secure technological leadership and play a meaningful role in the rapidly evolving global AI value chain.” (/End)
